Why I am a Christian
In the modern world of diversity and tolerance to be called a Christian can be somewhat of a scandal. At least if you are worthy of that name; actually living out the life that Christ called us to. While here on this earth this man who claimed to be so much more than just a man offered to us a way of life that most would call radical and absurd. In essence he called for us to lay at his feet everything we are or ever will be. “Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me.”
To be honest when I first heard of Jesus’ radical call to surrender I did not at all desire to submit to him and his ways. As all people are to a more or less degree I was a self-centered individual. Christ called, “Repent of your sins! Deny yourself! Follow me!” My natural reaction of course being selfishly motivated was to try to weasel around his demands and fit him into my life; instead of taking my life and laying it and its desires at his feet. This I attempted to do for some time, pushing God away and using him to my advantage.
Fortunately for me God had a different plan for me than to allow me to run down the path of destruction I had chosen. Reaching down from heaven he removed the scales from my heart, took out my heart of stone and replaced it with a heart of flesh. I became as he said a whole new creation. In consequence of this m whole worldview and thus my life changed. My habits and desires were gradually conformed more and more to his standards. During this period of fluctuation and to thid day there were many things that I couldn’t explain. All I can say is that I met a person since then I have never been the same.
This then is the reason I am a Christian. Here is why even in the stigma of today’s culture I can stand up and not only say that I am a believer but walk it out day by day. I cannot deny what occurred in my life. I cannot deny the one with whom I walk every second of the day. You see it was not just a onr time experience. Every day of my life since then has been impacted by my ongoing relationship with the God who saved me.
If I had chosen to do so I could have given you arguments for Christianity that are evidence to me of its truth. I could have debated till blue in the face the cosmological argument for God’s existence or the historicity of the resurrection. We might have probed the depths of the problem of evil or looked up at the stars and planets to discuss the intelligent design of the universe. However all this was to me just God’s gift of more reasons to buttress my already firm conviction that Jesus is the way.
Thus I am not afraid to to be numbered among those who have been labeled by our not-so-tolerant media as, “Hateful, Bigoted and Intolerant.” Because I know God and am convinced that the light that Christ shines is the world’s only hope. This is why I am a follower of Christ.
Soli Deo Gloria!!!
